Depression Symptoms Online - Symptoms And Treatment Information
Depression is a serious condition that will affect 1 in 20 individuals across their lifetime. The causes of depression come from biological, psychological and social causes meaning that becoming depressed can have several causes in the same person.
The good news is that treatments for depresssion are overwhelmingly successful especially when a holistic approach is taken to depression treatment. Some treatments have been reliably shown to work better than others for different types of depression but there are many approaches that sufferers and family have found useful.
To do nothing when you are depressed or a family member is depressed (or manic) will mean it takes longer to recover and can put you or a family member at increased risk of suicide, self harm and injury.
So where do you start?
Firstly you need to identify the symptoms of depression and use the standard definitions to see whether you are suffering from a down day or that your symptoms and low feelings are prolonged. Where they are prolonged and numerous then its time to find someone who can help. It could be your doctor or GP who can refer you to a psychologist or a psychiatrist: if medication is recommended, or you could read up on depression treatment yourself. Many a person has learnt something from a good book about depression and been able to recover from a bout of depression permanently.
Postnatal depression also needs mentioning as it is not just the mother (and occasionally, the father) who is at risk but the baby is at risk of neglect, harm, and lack of bonding. In the most tragic cases of postnatal depression, a desperate mother may kill one or more of her children. Hearing news of such cases, usually in larger cities is always devastating. Family and friends could have usually avoided such tragedies by being aware of the depression and gently making sure they are their to give mum a break and help her out. The outward signs are not always obvious but often can be.
